Every Woodland Yurt is individually hand crafted by Paul King (author of "The Complete Yurt Handbook"). We follow the traditional Mongolian and Kyrgyz yurt designs, but make slight changes, where necessary, to make them better suited to our climate and to the materials used.

We make about thirty different sizes and styles of yurt Click here to se the full list and prices. There are two different types of yurt: The Mongolian ger and the Bentwood Kyrgyz/Kazakh yurt. We can make both styles in either sawn timber or coppice wood.

The Frame
Each frame is made using local Hardwoods. Only the finest, straight grained, knot free stems are used. Ger crowns are of English oak. Bentwood crowns are of ash.

Sawn Timber FrameSawn Timber
The ash for our yurts is selected from local woodlands and sawn to size at our workshop. The sawn timber is planed, the edges chamfered. Wall poles are steam-bent and then seasoned for many months. The finished parts are then sanded and treated with oils to give a beautiful, tough and durable finish. Ash is the timber of choice due to its strength and flexibility.

Coppice Wood Yurt InteriorCoppice wood
Round chestnut poles are cut by hand from traditionally managed coppice woods in Southern England. The poles are peeled by hand to reveal the wood beneath. Every pole is steamed, straightened by hand before being bent to its final shape and seasoned for many months. The finished poles are bleached and treated with oils to give a smooth beautiful and durable finish.

The Cover
We have recently completely redesigned our yurt covers to give an even better fit and a much smarter look. Each canvas cover is fitted to its own frame. The cover comes in five parts: Roof cover, wall cover with plastic skirt to protect the bottom of the cover and frame, removable crown cover, tension band and canvas door. A very tough welded PVC groundsheet is included in the price.

Canvas

We use 12oz. (407g/m³) fire*, water and rot** proofed cotton/polyester canvas. The fabric is white (a creamy white) to allow maximum light transmission. The canvas is waterproof and breathable and should last many years. 12 oz. Canvas is heavy enough to give full protection from the weather a reasonable level of insulation and to give the yurt a very solid feel, yet light enough to dry fairly quickly (important if you are waiting to pack the yurt ready to get moving fairly early in the day, and less prone to fungal attack). Colouered (olive, sand or blue) and 100% cotton canvas are available at no extra cost.

**We are constantly testing different canvases from the various manufacturers and use the most durable natural fabrics available. The canvas is rot resistant in accordance with BS2087(1992). This offers a good degree of protection, but there are limits. Even treated canvas will suffer from mildew in damp situations where it does not get a chance to dry between showers, in woods, near hedges or under trees are particularly bad. Recent warm, wet winter and autumn weather favours the growth of mildew. So, we strongly recomend that the yurt is not left up during these months if it is not in regular use. *The canvas is flame retardent Not fireproof so be very careful when using stoves, cookers, candles etc in the yurt.

"It is just a delight more and more to discover and to settle in the yurt. We feel finally arrived home." K&L (Austria, 2003)
